Lemieux and Gretzky in the Mix for NikeBauer

According to the Toronto Globe & Mail, Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky are potential partners that may be interested in acquiring the Nike Bauer company, the worldwide leader in hockey equipment.

Unfortunately, comments will not be made by any party involved

None of the potential bidders for Nike Bauer have gone public with their interest, and the company is not talking, either.

"Unfortunately, we cannot comment on the status of the process, other than it is moving forward and there has been tremendous interest to date," Nike Bauer spokesman Steven Jones said.

Basically, they are in the phase where the groups will have a look at the financial records of the company and then decide if they should proceed with bids. There is speculation that bids could reach as high as $250 million, which is incredibly less than what Nike paid for the Bauer name in 1995 ($395 million).

UPDATE The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that a Penguins official has stated Mario Lemieux's interest in the deal is completely false

Whoever purchases the Bauer name would just have a license to print money at that point. If you have Lemieux and Gretzky behind it-- game over.
