By looking at the numbers, you'll see a large increase in the last 15 years of the amount of trades that happen. The leash around the necks of general managers is short, so the pressure to win now is incredibly high, even if one of the players you acquire is merely a rental. Look at the Islanders last year, sending a number of young prospects to Edmonton for Ryan Smyth. General Manager Garth Snow had to realize the chances of him being able to re-sign Smyth over the summer was slim, but with a loyal fanbase, he needed to do everything in his power to help get New York into the playoffs.

With names like Marian Hossa, Dan Boyle, and Mats Sundin among the rumored names to be on the move in the next two weeks, it'll be interesting to see what GM's are willing to take some high risks in order to take a shot at the Stanley Cup.
