The Kelowna Rockets have another great prospect they have been molding. First, it was Predators’ defenseman Shea Weber, and now it’s Luke Schenn. Schenn seems to have followed Weber’s lead, being able to be a play-making defenseman while still being responsible in his own end as well. Schenn actually roomed with Weber when Schenn was called up as a 15-year-old.
Schenn, who is in his third season with the Rockets, has had an amazing year internationally representing Canada in the Super Series and World Junior Championship and making an impact in both tournaments, which raised his stock throughout the year.
Schenn’s game isn’t fancy, in fact—it’s rather simple. He plays a solid, shut-down defensive game and gets physical when it calls for it. With an extra year of development under his belt, it should allow the transition period for Schenn to be much easier than it would be for some of the other defensemen that will be taken in this draft.
Schenn is a determined person by trade. A story that seems to be making its rounds is that Schenn’s parents wanted to purchase him a laptop to take on the road. When Schenn heard that Rockets alums Weber and Blake Comeau got laptops from the team for participating in the World Juniors, Schenn told his parents not to worry about getting him one, he would get it himself.
Let’s just hope Schenn uses that laptop to log onto “Going Five Hole”, hopefully to enjoy this write-up.
