Ryan Whitney Out Three to Five Months

Well, that didn't take long.

The first injury of the 2008-09 campaign has hit defenseman Ryan Whitney who, according to Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, will miss three to five months due to a misaligned foot. He apparently played with one healthy foot last season, which would explain his 19 point drop in production, but he won't let the injury become an excuse for his play:

"I'm not making that an excuse," Whitney said. "I need to perform better than I did, and I know that is the expectation. But I've always thought skating was the biggest part of my game, and last season, I couldn't skate like I can."

The Pens are already pretty deep at defense, even if Darryl Sydor and his $2.5 million contract are moved. Prospect Alex Goligoski will sure to get another long look.

Who's going to work the backdoor play now with Sid?

Word of warning... don't look up images of osteotomy if you don't have a strong stomach.

only way this news would be any better is if it were 6-10 months instead of 3-5.

Keep in mind that the Penguins have two amazing playmakers in Crosby and Malkin. Anybody who's on their lines will have a boost in productivity. I still think the Pens will do well this season. Last season they managed to finish second in the East with Crosby and Fleury out of commission for a long time. If those two remain healthy, this team should be very competitive.Savard is one of the best playmakers in the league, but how did Glen Murray do this season? Conklin's performance was the reason they won without Fleury. Malkin did amazing while Crosby was out - mostly because Malkin is better. I don't care how good of playmakers they have, Satan and Fedetenko will not get more than 50 points each. Gonchar can't play defense, they have lost depth and toughness, they have lost skilled wingers, they are not going to be that good this year. The Flyers will win that division, the Caps will win the East. They'll make the playoffs, but not go anywhere with it.
