Welcome to the first "Puttin' On the Foil" for the '08-09 season. If you're new to the "Foil", you'll find it at GFH every Sunday evening highlighting the past week of the NHL season. It will run every Sunday through the regular season. I've changed some things up and altered the topics being covered from what I did last year. I hope you enjoy.
WEEK THAT WAS
Games were played in Europe.
The Red Wings raised their Stanley Cup banner.
Clint Malarchuk was involved in another scary incident.
First, Patrick Sullivan gave in and signed a 3-year deal, then Dean Lombardi locked up Anze Kopitar for 7-years.
Michael Peca was suspended for making contact with a ref, though by judging from his past, I can imagine this being something blown out of proportion.
Rick DiPietro has fluid on his knee. Or maybe not.
EXCELLENT ELEVEN POWER RANKINGS
Beginning next week, once teams have played more than one game, I'll have these up.
LET'S GO TO THE VIDEOTAPE
This week's edition of Coach's Corner
Your new "Hockey Night in Canada" anthem
Sarah Palin making friends in Philadelphia
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Daniel Sedin, Vancouver
2 GP, 3G, 2A, 5pts, +4
Nothing like getting a head-start on earning that big contract for you and your brother. A blowout on Friday night and a comeback win last night against Calgary, Daniel and brother Henrik are hoping to prove critics wrong that the Canucks are hurting for goals.
GAME OF THE WEEK
Columbus at Dallas- 10/10
After Dallas took a 2-1 lead mid-way through the 2nd period, the Blue Jackets stormed back with three consecutive goals in the first seven minutes of the 3rd. With time ticking down, Brad Richards and Trevor Daley scored 33 seconds apart to tie the game and send it to overtime. In the extra period, Rick Nash potted the winner to spoil the Stars' home-opener.
UPCOMING GAME OF INTEREST
