Michel Therrien had an early hook on Marc-Andre Fleury after he let in two first period goals. Dany Sabourin came off the bench and while he didn't exactly thrill HCMT during the final two periods, it was the shootout where Sabu came to the Penguins aid.
A Tyler Kennedy goal eight minutes into the second period gave Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead after being down 2-0 early on. Ottawa clawed back with two of their own within a 2:15 span and added an early third period goal to go up 5-3 and put the Pens back on their heels. A garbage goal by Ryan Malone and then a still unseen slapper from the slot by Sergei Gonchar and this game was tied yet again.
After allowing the first shootout attempt by Jason Spezza in, Dany Sabourin denied Ottawa their next four chances and Jarkko Ruutu supplied the dramatics with a ferocious leg kick deke and slipped the puck backhand under Martin Gerber's pad for the victory.
