Fantasy Frenzy: My Kingdom For A Goalie

Goalies in fantasy hockey are nearly as valuable as they are in real life. In most leagues you have two or three guys on your roster determining four or five stat categories. That is why it has been a frustrating season for many fantasy owners as many top tier goalies have either struggled greatly or spent a prolonged time on the shelf with an injury.

Sure there have been goalies who have come through for their owners, but for every Tim Thomas or Niklas Backstrom there is a Marty Turco or Jose Theodore to send fantasy teams plummeting down the standings. So here is my question for you the reader: who have been the brightest stars and the biggest flops between the pipes so far this fantasy season? And you can't just say Marty Turco, because we all know that everything bad that has happened so far in Dallas is Sean Avery's fault.

Pick-Up of the Week:
  • Manny Fernandez (G - BOS) - There is no doubt that Tim Thomas is the number one goalie in Boston, but Fernandez is (like pretty much every Bruin) playing extremely well right now and could definitely find a home on most fantasy teams right now. Manny has won his last seven starts and only gave up more than two goals twice in that span. That is a lot more than most goalies can say these days.
Fantasy 3 Stars of the Week:
  1. Pekka Rinne - Leave it to Nashville to dig up another hot goalie. It seems like this team can't go more than a couple weeks without having a goalie controversy. Rinne played beyond his years last week winning all three of his starts and picking up a pair of shutouts in the process.
  2. Jonathan Toews - Toews seems to have broken out of his early season goal scoring woes as his four goals (two of which were game-winners) last week would attest. The Blackhawks captain also notched a pair of assists and three points on the power play.
  3. Peter Stastny - Two goals, five assists, +5, and a game-winner. Most weeks a line like that would land Stastny in the top spot on this list. I doubt his fantasy owners are complaining.

Rinne threw a fit last night(youtube it), and at one point through the puck and his blocker at a fellow defenseman.. Ha Ha it was a 1st for me to see a professional goalie do that. I was reading the stats on Chris Mason, and his last few games he's been superb, 164 saves on 171 shots. (I don't know if I'll play him this week as the Blues head out west, and will most likely start the fragile ego'd Legace the 1st night)

As for Toews, his younger brother had a great week as well for UND out in Boston, and if you know anything about JT he turns it up ten fold after Christmas (Kaner, and Versteeg are going to be loving it, as they pad V's Calder #'s, which is unfortunate for the 20 yr old Berglund, who's in 4th right now having played 5 less games then the elder 3)..

Ya, him and his wife decided against traveling to Colorado a few weeks ago to watch Paul and Yan play against eachother for the 1st time in the NHL. I guess he was having too much fun playing in Europe..
